Sarah Osborn's World: The Rise of Evangelical Christianity in Early America (Yale University Press, 2013)

Catherine A. Brekus will speak about her latest book, in which she examines the life of Osborn, one of the most charismatic female religious leaders of her time, and connects her story to the rising evangelical movement in 18th-century America.

Brekus teaches American religious history at the University of Chicago, where she is an associate professor at the Divinity School and associate faculty in the Department of History. She is the author or editor of several books on the history of women and religion, including Strangers and Pilgrims: Female Preachers in America (1998).

Commentators for this seminar are Ann D. Braude, director of the Women's Studies in Religion Program and  senior lecturer on American religious history at Harvard Divinity School, and Catherine Cangany, assistant professor of history at the University of Notre Dame.
