Elesha Coffman (Baylor University) will offer a public lecture on the work and spiritual life of Margaret Mead.
Anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901–1978) thought of herself as “a newer kind of person that’s only made possible in this century.” Her approach to Christianity also engaged its historical context in ways that shed light on the vexing category of modernism. This lecture examines her Episcopal religion across eras in which “modern faith” meant quite different things, from the flappers and Fundamentalist controversies of the 1920s through liturgical renewal in the 1960s.
